Gesture
Gesture™ redefines the relationship between you and your desk chair. Contoured back and adjustments are designed for all the ways technology shapes your posture.
What if we could design a chair that would encourage motion rather than forcing the body to hold a pose? What if we could design a chair that augments our experience with technology rather than gets in the way of it? Simply put,
why not create a chair as advanced as today’s technology?
STEELCASE SEATING DESIGN TEAM
Design
We constantly invest in user research as part of our product design process. Gesture’s story began with the
Global Posture Study,
which involved 2000 participants in 11 countries and was conducted in collaboration with Steelcase WorkSpace Futures researchers and Steelcase Design Studio.

new postures
The study was quick to reveal technology was the single greatest force driving changes in the way we work, live and behave. We discovered that new technologies changed how users interacted with their workspaces, revealing new behaviors in the ways people of work, move and simply sit.
These new behaviors led to
nine new postures
that are not adequately addressed by current seating solutions and therefore not ergonomically supporting their users.
The Core Interface.
Our body is a system in which the back and legs are synchronized in movement. Like the human body, Gesture’s back and seat move as a synchronized system that creates a tailored fit, moving with each user to provide continuous and persistent lumbar support.
The Upper Limb Interface.
Gesture’s arm moves like the human arm, which helps people to get closer to their work and supports their arms and shoulders, no matter the device they are using. Gesture’s arms are mounted behind the hip to support a wider range of postures and people.
The Seat Interface.
The contoured seat distributes weight to make it comfortable longer. It is flexible at the perimeter to allow a range of postures without pinching or cutting off circulation. The seat depth control is responsive and makes it easy to “fine tune” so people are less likely to perch on the edge of their chairs.
Next Generation
Gesture incorporates the next evolution of Steelcase’s proprietary LiveBack technology to go beyond everyday support. Like LiveBack technology, 3D LiveBack offers the same intuitive contouring support with an advanced system of synchronized interfaces, supporting a greater range of postures through the back, the seat and the arms. The placement of the arms toward the back of the chair and the soft seat edges allow for comfortable alternative postures.
Smart-fit
Immediate Fit.
The comprehensive controls offer users a fine-tuned seating experience for complete personalization. Users can quickly adapt Gesture to their preferred settings with precision and ease.
